Extra care must be taken between 11am and 3pm, and using a sunscreen of 30+ or higher is a must, as is wearing a good pair of sunglasses. If you are swimming it is a good idea to apply a water-resistant sunscreen throughout the day.

Australia wide, the telephone number of 000 is the emergency number. Please call for a genuine emergency if you need police, ambulance or fire brigade assistance.

BUSHFIRE EMERGENCIES

Many parts of Australia experience bushfires and there are danger periods, usually during late spring and summer in the south and winter and spring in the north. Always check for fire danger and use the TV, local radio and newspaper reports to keep yourself updated. Under no circumstances should you wander into a fire danger zone thinking you will be alright.

ARE AUSTRALIA'S BEACHED SAFE TO SWIN IN?

Australia has more than 10,000 beaches and they often have strong currents. Many people can be caught off guard by these. Always swim between the red and yellow flags as these areas are patrolled by lifeguards during the summer months. Always check water depth before diving.

Shark attacks are rare but do occur so swimming in patrolled areas is a must as is not swimming alone or way off shore. Crocodile habitats exist especially in northern Australia in rivers, seas and coastal estuaries. Always observe safety signs and don’t swim in rivers, deep pools, mangroves or estuaries. Marine stingers are also present so remain vigilant.

DO I NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE?
