Continue onto Jerash, known in ancient times as Gerasa and visit the most well-preserved Greco-Roman ruins in the world. Jerash was an important city of the Decapolis, and recent excavations show that it was already inhabited during the Bronze Age. Return to Amman and overnight.

Tuesday Amman – Leisure Day

Wednesday Amman – Madaba – Mt. Nebo – Petra

Set out for Madaba today. Madaba city is known for its exquisitely preserved Byzantine mosaics, many of which can be seen in their original locations on ancient church floors, precisely where they stood centuries ago. Madaba’s real masterpiece, in the Orthodox Church of Saint George, is the 6th century AD mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land – the earliest religious map of the Holy Land in any form to survive from antiquity. Continue onto Mt. Nebo, where Moses gazed at the Promised Land before he died. Mt. Nebo is also believed to be his burial place. Visit the old monastery, and enjoy the unique scenery overlooking the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, Jericho and Jerusalem. Drive along the King’s Highway heading for Petra. Overnight in Petra. (B)

Thursday Petra – Wadi Rum – Aqaba

Today’s highlight is a half-day visit to the Rose Red City of Petra, first established in the 6th century BCE by the Nabatean Arabs, a nomadic tribe who settled in the area and founded a commercial empire. You may begin your journey on horseback or by foot through the canyon or Siq. As you walk through the breathtaking canyon, you suddenly see before you Petra’s most famous monument: the Treasury. From here you have time to explore the city on your own; you can see the Street of Facades, the Royal Tombs and Pharaoh’s Castle. Continue south to Wadi Rum, and enjoy a two-hour 4×4 jeep safari through Jordan’s most spectacular desert landscape. Drive onwards to your Red Sea resort and overnight in Aqaba. (B)

Friday Aqaba – Day at Leisure
