FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS THE DRESS CODE IN THE UAE?

The UAE has a reasonably liberal dress code, in particular in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Shorts, skirts, singlets and dresses are perfectly acceptable. However, when entering any religious monument or mosque, men must wear long-sleeved shirts and shorts below the knee or pants, and women must cover their shoulders and wear a light scarf to cover their hair.
The Emriate of Sharjah is rather more strict, however, so please be sure to check at the reception desk of your hotel if you decide to travel to this Emirate.

CAN I WEAR A BIKINI ON THE BEACH?

Of course! It is perfectly acceptable to wear bikinis and all manner of swimming wear at beaches and hotel swimming pools.

CAN I DRINK ALCOHOL IN THE UAE?

In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, you will be able to enjoy alcohol inside bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Drinking in public spaces is illegal throughout the UAE.

WHAT ARTS & CULTURE SPACES EXIST IN THE UAE?

Dubai and Abu Dhabi, in particular, support the arts scene, with many contemporary galleries and art spaces available. Abu Dhabi also has the sister museum of Le Louvre in Paris, simply called Le Louvre Abu Dhabi. In the coming months, the Guggenheim will also have its sister museum in the emirate.

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO SPEAK THE LOCAL LANGUAGE IN THE UAE?

The expat community make up the majority of the population in the United Arab Emirates, particularly in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. English is widely spoken, as are many other languages.
