This morning proceed to Nizwa. Stop at the pretty village of Birkat al Mauz situated at the foothills of Jebel Akhdar or the Green Mountains. Enjoy a walk through its oasis and dense date plantations. Then depart for Jabrin, the finest of Oman’s castles built in the late 17th Century which became the seat of Omani learning. The castle displays the highest achievement in Omani ceiling painting and beautifully executed woodcarvings.

Then visit Misfah, a beautiful mountain village with stone dwellings still in existence. While heading for Jebel Shams, stop at the terrace farming village of Wadi Ghul. The next stop will take you to Wadi Nakher located i the deepest canyon. In the Jebel Akhdar Range, Jebel Shams offers the highest peak with a spectacular view. Nizwa, capital of the interior, is the birthplace of Islam in the Sultanate of Oman. Nizwa Souq is renowned for its intricately hand-carved khanjars (daggers) and ornamental silver jewellery.

Return to Nizwa. Visitors to bring own picnic lunch. Overnight stay at Falaj Daris Hotel/The View.


Depart from Nizwa for Wahiba Sands, a vast mass of undulating red and white sea of sand and dunes rising up to 200 metres and are host to a variety of flora and fauna. The ever-changing patterns of the dunes are a photographer’s delight. Visit a Bedouin house in this wilderness. In stark contrast to this is Wadi Bani Khalid. It comprises of small, pretty villages embedded in the mountains. The Wadi has clear, deep blue water. Then head for Sur. Overnight stay at Sur Plaza Hotel.


Visit the fish jetty and dhow factory and then the Sineslah Fort. The ruins of Bibi Miriam’s (the Virgin Mary) tomb can be seen at the village of Qalhat on the coastal road to Muscat.  Stop at Fins Beach for a swim and then travel onward to Bimah Sinkhole, a spectacular limestone crater with blue-green water at the bottom. On clear, sunny days while driving along the coast one might chance to see the sharks in the water or fleet footed gazelle sprint across the landscape. Proceed to Wadi Arbayeen which has refreshing deep pools of water set among the date palms. Return to Muscat via Quriyat and check into your hotel.
