Depart from Muscat and proceed to visit the Nizwa Round Tower Fort and Nizwa Souq. Drive to the pretty village of Birkat Al Mauz. Enjoy a walk through the lush, green date plantations. Proceed to Wadi Al Madeen. From here, a 36km stretch of winding road will take you to Jebel Al Akhdar (2000 metres above sea level) the green jewel of the Al Hajjar Mountain Ranges. This is truly a unique spot in the Arabian Peninsula where you can enjoy the cool climate.
Al Jebel Al Akhdar is famed for its fruit orchards, typically laid out in terrace style along the slopes of mountains which are endowed with natural springs and affaj. The villages of Saiq, Wadi Bani Habib (the village of old houses) and Al Ain dot the landscape. The villages overlook a spectacular landscape of dramatic peaks, gorges and wadis. The roses of Jebel Al Akhdar fill the air with fragrance when in full bloom (March/April). Rose water is distilled in local homes here. It is advisable to wear light comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Overnight stay at the Jebel Akhdar Hotel.
Breakfast at the hotel. Proceed to the Wadis Sands. The Wahiba Sands is home to the traditional Bedouin tribes who are known for their hospitality and knowledge of the Sands area. The everchanging patterns of the dunes are a photographers delight. In stark contrast to this is Wadi Bani Khalid. It comprises of small pretty villages embedded in the mountains. The Wadi has clear deep blue water.
Dinner and overnight stay in tents at the 1001 Nights Camp in the desert (or Desert Nights Camp).
Breakfast at the camp. Experience the thrills of dune driving before departing for Sur. Stop at Fins Beach or a swim. Then onto Bimah Sinkhole, a spectacular limestone crater with blue-green water. On clear days while driving along the coast one might chance to see sharks swimming in the deep blue water or fleet-footed gazelle sprint across the landscape. Proceed to Wadi Arbayeen which has refreshing deep pools of water set among date palms. Return to Muscat.
