DAY 1 – Göreme – Mt. Nemrut
Depart for Kahta, en route visiting the 13th century Seljukian Caravanserai Karatay Han. After lunch, drive to Kahramanmaras. Dinner and overnight in Kahta BD
DAY 2 – Mt. Nemrut – Urfa
At 3am this morning, set off to climb Mt. Nemrut and watch the sunrise upon the colossal statues of the kings and gods. Drive back to Kahta through Arsemia, and the Roman bridge of Cendere. Relax over a hearty breakfast in Kahta. Continue onto Urfa to visit Harran and the Balikli Gol. BD
DAY 3 – Urfa – Mardin – Diyarbakir
Drive to Diyarbakir, formerly called Amid, and visit some of the longest city walls in all the world, second only to China’s Great Wall. Afternoon drive to Mardin and overnight. BD
DAY 4 – Mardin
Drive to Suryani Deir-el Zafaran Monastery this morning. Return to the city for a walking tour also taking in Kadim Kirklar Monastery and the famous Anthological and Ethnographical Museum of the city. BD
DAY 5 – Mardin – Hassankeyf – Van
Visit Hasankeyf with its multi-cultural foundations of the Arabs, Seljuks, Mongolians and Ottomans. Sadly, much of it will be under the flows of rivers after the completion of the GAP project for building dams in the region. BD
DAY 6 – Van
Drive to Van and visit Akdamar Church en route, which boasts the most complete scenes of the Old Testament carved onto its façade. Take a small boat ride to Akdamar Island on Lake Van. Late afternoon tour of Van. Climb up to the city’s Urartian Fortress. BD
DAY 7 – Van – Mt. Ararat – Dogubeyazit
Head to Dogubeyazit and then to Ishak Pasa Palace, one of the oldest and most complete palace complexes in the world, dating back to 1100 AD. BD
DAY 8 – Dogubeyazit – Ani – Kars – Erzurum
Further east to the Armenian border, see the famous ancient Armenian city of Ani. Established as the ancient capital, it remained a prosperous trading city under the Byzantines and Seljuks. Afternoon drive to Erzurum and overnight. BD
DAY 9 – Erzurum – Trabzon via Bayburt
After visiting the Seljukian Caravanserai and the tombs in Erzurum, enjoy the scenic drive to Trabzon via the north-eastern mountain ranges. Overnight in Trabzon. BD
DAY 10 – Trabzon
This morning, visit the 4th century Sumela Monastery. Explore the highlights of Trabzon city, and view the extraordinary collection of Byzantine frescoes in the 13th century church of Ayasofya. Visit Ataturk’s Mansion on Soguksu Hill facing the Black Sea as well as Trabzon Castle. BD
